The Sound Engineer must know about the equipment
he/she is dealing with, know how to recreate a certain atmosphere/environment
in recording, check out the venue ensuring enough power is present
for live performances, conferences, etc., get the right balance
among instruments in a song or voice-over, know what to emphasise
and what to play down, etc. Sound Engineers should have good

Senior College Ballyfermot
has identified many new skills and job profiles within the
area of sound engineering, training and education. The College
has authored many extra-curriculum modules and modernised
facilities to cater for recruitment within the new emerging
technologies such as interactive media and communications
industries. An example of this is the creation of student
internet WWW homepages so to allow the internet community
to examine the various media activities and productions within
the student body.
These productions would include music and sound files created
by the sound engineering students and also allow music management
students to promote student performers and bands by designing
on-line press packs which would include audio/visual samples
of their music recordings and visual product. Within the Sound
Department the emphasis is on creative sound engineering and
a unique synergy exists between the students from the Performance,
Management and Sound Engineering courses. The objectives of
the course are to develop competent operational skills of
modern recording and live sound systems with the aim of using
these skills to produce professional products and services.
The sound facilities include a 24-Track recording studio and
multi-media PC workstations equipped with sound cards, modules,
samplers, mixers, data machines, fx, internet access, etc.
Software includes cubase for windows, finale scoring, Netscape,
cool edit digital and interactive on-line music educational
CD-ROMs developed with European partners. The college also
runs a record label 'Rockhall Records' which releases music
CDs of students' recordings.

sound production: - radio, experimental audio and music recording.
Subjects include engineering, audio theory, musicianship,
sequencing and sampling and studio practice and also provides
workshops/guest lecturers from the industry. Access to high
quality, up-to-date equipment allows students to reach a very
high standard in all subjects.
